OU receives between 200 to 400 students from 64 countries each academic year. Currently OU connects with 170 universities in other countries. The vast majority of OU’s students come from European countries. However, the Asian countries are growing quickly as well as the Latin American countries. A pattern in the selection of majors with international students depends on the country. Many Colombian students are engineering or geophysics. The UK students are primarily business or meteorology and many of the French are Business students as well. Overall, there are as lot of Business and Engineering students, but a wide variety of others as well.
OU exchange student program was one of the first Universities in the U.S. to start reciprocal exchanges in the mid 80’s. Many universities modeled their program after OU. Also, the program at OU has had numerous employees, student assistants and study abroad alumni go to work for various universities across the U.S. as well as other countries, to help develop their study abroad program. For instance, they had one study abroad advisor who left OU and started the study abroad program at Rice University, a very prestigious university in Houston, Texas.Tina Henderson, Staff Assistant for Education Abroad, said that “OU’s programs are one of the best in country primarily due to the personal service that we give each and every student that walks through our door. From the time they step foot on our campus, our office in involved in their daily academic and social life.” She added words that she was sure that other universities worked with students as well do, but every student who comes to OU as an exchange student walked away with the best experience of their life.
The International Students Service center manages the exchange students program. Even though OU connects with other universities now, OU tries to have connection with about 5 more universities from other countries. In addition, OU is joined with 170 universities in the world currently. However, OU expects to connect with more 5 universities in especially the Asia and the Middle East part.
